Project 3: brain storming

Reoccurring Dreams

When thinking about the topic for our project Cyclical Nature of Things I first thought of dreams. When we sleep, not only does our bodies rest through sleeping cycles but our mind is processing information from the day before piecing together stories that are made up in our subconscious.

I have always been fascinated by dreams. Recently I have been having reoccurring dreams that feel almost as nightmares. I hope to recreate this dream though recreating imagery that I can remember.

This is my first try at trying to recreate some of this dream. From what I can remember, I am walking though a dark forest with my cat, Liam. It is very eerie feeling and the trees are hanging low. I feel as if I am being watched, but I am not sure where or by what.

I realize that the image is really dark and would not be great for printings. I could possibly change the contrast of the image or use some of the other adjustments options to make the image brighter.

Suggestions and constructive criticism would be appreciated!

  1. Your concept is very powerful and I am also really interested in dreams, so I am excited with how you'll proceed. I think you made a good call in considering adding back contrast so the image isn't completely blank. This may be cheesy, but what if there's a hidden light somewhere?

Your cat also looks like he's floating, and maybe figuring out how to ground him would be great. Also when I look at the eye I get this scrap booky vibe/collage. I think going forth with this effect of torn paper put together into this one big image aligns well with the idea of dreams, and trying to piece together or making sense of it all. Maybe some parts look unfinished?

  2. This is a super cool concept. I wish I had thought of cycles in this way. It definitely opens up a lot of possibilities for some really interesting pieces. So far I'm loving what's going on in the image. It looks like something out of an indie video game or book. Maybe play with gradient overlays. There's a lot of room in the ceiling to add images fading in or out of the darkness.

  3. I’m really excited for your concept development and the final images! I’m really enjoying what’s already happening here. The darkness does give me this sense of a dream, like at any moment the image could collapse on you. I also enjoy that it looks like the point of view of what you would see in the dream. Maybe instead of having it so dark for printing purposes you could add a strong vignette (I think that’s what it’s called) to make it feel like a closing tunnel. Also, I agree that your cat looks a little strange in the placement style. Perhaps you could get a photo of them walking to capture the movement and give that feeling that you’re both walking through the forest, like you were describing of your dream.

  4. I really like your concept and I can't wait to see what you end up doing. I agree with what you said, it might be a little too dark but you have a lot of time to work through that. I feel like you could always use a gradient or pick certain parts to remain so dark. You're doing great work and I'm excited to see what you come up with!

  5. Your concept is great and already coming through in the dreamy/spooky/mysterious tone of your composite. I like that it's overall a darker image, but I would like to see some hidden details in the darker parts instead of flat black/shadows. Perhaps a few barely there patterns or image overlays blending into the shadows that still lead the eye down the tunnel to the stairs. It might also help to unify the tone of the image by having more illustrative elements around the image and not just in the eye at the top.
